We often find ourselves living in a cluttered home. Busy schedules make it difficult to tackle accumulated clutter and dirt. We bring home bags of quite unnecessary items as a result of impulse shopping. There are unpaired socks lying around. A screw that has fallen off something and you can’t remember what. The list goes on.
Clear the clutter and dismiss that dirt. Here is how:
Kitchen: It is good to begin here as this is a veritable breeding ground for bacteria.
The knobs and the drip tray of your stove can be soaked in warm soapy water to get rid of the grime.
A dirty sink has more bacteria than a toilet bowl does. After washing it with soap and warm water, wipe it down with vinegar to disinfect.
Sprinkle baking soda around the edges of your dishwasher and wipe, to get rid of residual food from dirty dishes. Do this at least once a week to prevent bacteria build up.
Keep your kitchen sponge disinfected. Squeeze it dry every night and microwave it for a minute.
Use microfiber cloth instead of paper towels.
Bedroom: Take a look at all the surfaces in your bedroom. Do you see clutter? Throw away anything that you have not used for over a week. Keep only what is essential on your bedside table - an alarm clock, a book, a lamp, a box of tissues and your moisturizer. Turn out those drawers and cupboards. If you have clothes and shoes that you have not worn for at least a year, it is time to get rid of them.
Bathroom:
If you are given to reading in the toilet, sift through your magazine collection and get rid of all that is outdated.
Check your cabinet for expired medicines.
Keep the toilet bowl sparkling. Sprinkle it with borax and scrub it well.
There is nothing more annoying than finding stray hair on the bathroom floor. Use slightly dampened toilet paper to sweep them off the floor.
Unclog the drains at least once a week.
The Fridge: This is a much neglected, much used household appliance. It turns from a storage device into a museum. Before you decide to clear it up, unplug the fridge. Use your vacuum cleaner to clear out the dust on the coils behind the fridge. Turn your attention to the inside; use a damp sponge to wipe all the surfaces.
The Microwave oven: This is the second most used appliance in any household. The only attention it gets is when something needs to be heated. With food particles splattering inside, grime collects and becomes a hotbed for breeding bacteria. What you need to do is to fill a large bowl with water, put in some vinegar or cut up lemon, and run the microwave on High for a few minutes, till the water boils. Wait fifteen minutes before you open it and clean with a sponge.
The Washing machine: With long use, the washing machine turns into a lint trap. Nothing is more disgusting than having your clothes emerge from the dryer covered with lint. To clear it, take out the lint filter; give it a rub with a fabric softener sheet or a brush. Then run water over it using a brush to unclog the pores.
The mattress: It is good to flip and rotate your mattress every 3 to 4 months for it to wear evenly. This gives you the chance to clean the bed frame. Use a microfiber cloth to get rid of every trace of dust. Dust mites can lurk around and cause allergies.
The toilet: Yet another often used space in every home, but not often cleaned! Paying attention especially to the sides and back of the toilet bowl, use a damp towel to clear up accumulated dust. Then use a multipurpose spray to give it a thorough wipe, using a brush to scrub the inside of the bowl. In case there are stains caused by use of hard water, you may need to use a commercial product to eliminate those.
Lost and Found box: This is essential in every household to drop in items that you find lying around but are not sure where they belong. Those unpaired socks can go into this box and you will know where to find them when needed.
Once you have spent time clearing out all the clutter and dirt from your home, make it a point to schedule about fifteen minutes a day to give your home a once over to ensure that it stays clutter free.
